Dehumidifier sizing FAQ
How do I choose the right dehumidifier size?
Match pint capacity to your room square footage and dampness level. The AHAM DH-1-2022 standard, paired with the DOE 2019 test procedure (10 CFR 430, Appendix X1), tests at 65°F / 60% RH — closer to real basement conditions. For moderately damp spaces: 10 pints per 500 sq ft. For very damp spaces: 10 pints per 250 sq ft. Use our dehumidifier calculator for an exact recommendation.
What size dehumidifier for a 1,000 sq ft basement?
A 1,000 sq ft moderately damp basement needs a 50-pint dehumidifier (per AHAM DH-1-2022). A very damp 1,000 sq ft basement (visible moisture, musty smell, prior flooding) needs a 70-pint unit. If the basement has a bathroom or laundry, add 5-10 pints to either recommendation.
What humidity level should I aim for?
Target 30-50% relative humidity for comfort and mold prevention. Below 30% causes dry skin, static, and wood cracking. Above 60% enables mold growth and dust mite proliferation. In summer, dehumidify to 45-50%; in winter, 35-40% is comfortable. Use a hygrometer ($10-20) to monitor.
Should I empty the bucket or use a drain hose?
For whole-home or basement dehumidifiers, always use a drain hose (gravity drain or condensate pump). Bucket emptying works for small portable units but requires daily attention and risks overflow if you forget. Most dehumidifiers have a 3/4-inch hose outlet on the back.
How much does a dehumidifier cost to run?
A 50-pint ENERGY STAR dehumidifier uses 400-500 watts, costing about $0.05/hour at average US electricity rates (~$0.13/kWh). Running 12 hours/day, that's ~$22/month. ENERGY STAR models are 15-20% more efficient than non-certified units. Auto-defrost and auto-shutoff features save additional energy.
Where should I place a dehumidifier?
Place it in the dampest area with at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides for airflow. Elevate it if your basement floods. Keep it away from direct heat sources. For whole-home dehumidification, central dehumidifiers integrate with your HVAC system and are more efficient than multiple portables.
