How do I choose the right sump pump size?

Match horsepower (HP) to your pit depth and water inflow rate. 1/3 HP handles most residential basements with pits under 7 ft and normal water tables. 1/2 HP for deeper pits (7-12 ft) or high water tables. 3/4-1 HP for very deep pits or heavy inflow. 1/3 HP or 1/2 HP sump pump?

A 1/3 HP sump pump delivers 2,400-3,000 GPH at 10 ft head and handles most residential basements with normal water tables. A 1/2 HP pump delivers 3,000-3,600 GPH at 10 ft head and is needed for deeper pits or high water tables. The 1/2 HP uses 30-40% more electricity but cycles faster. For basements under 1,500 sq ft with low-to-moderate water, 1/3 HP is sufficient.

Do I need a battery backup sump pump?

Yes if your area has frequent power outages or your basement floods without power. A battery backup adds 6-12 hours of pumping and runs $150-300 installed. Heavy rain + power outage = flooded basement within hours. Water-powered backups need municipal water pressure but have unlimited runtime. For critical applications (finished basements), consider both battery AND a generator.

Pedestal or submersible sump pump?

Submersible: sealed motor underwater, quieter (50-60 dB), lasts 5-15 years, costs more ($150-400). Best for finished basements and higher-capacity needs. Pedestal: motor sits above water, easier to service, louder (65-75 dB), lasts 10-25 years, costs less ($100-250). Best for utility spaces, crawl spaces, and DIY-friendly installations. Both are reliable for typical residential use.

How long do sump pumps last?

Pedestal sump pumps last 10-25 years; submersible pumps last 5-15 years. Hard use (heavy cycling, debris, hard water) shortens lifespan. Replace before failure — a sump pump that dies during a storm can cause $5,000-20,000 in basement damage. Replace any pump over 10 years old proactively. Test every 3-6 months by pouring water into the pit until the float triggers the pump.

How much does a sump pump cost to run?

A 1/3 HP sump pump uses 400-500 watts when running — about $0.05/hour at average US electricity rates. Running 100 hours/month (heavy rain season), that's ~$5/month.
